EROSION CONTROL
FAQ

Q:  What is CPESC?

A:

CPESC stands for Certified Professional in Erosion and Sedimentation Control.  Individuals holding this designation have combined education and professional experience of 8 years and have passed a comprehensive written exam.

Q: What is the difference between erosion and sedimentation?

A:

Erosion is the movement of soil particles and sedimentation is the deposition of soil particles.

Q:  Why should I have an ESCP?

A:

To avoid future problems.  The State of Maine, for instance, has an Erosion Control Law which says that you can not cause erosion or sedimentation on offsite properties. It applies to any project, no matter how big or small.

Q:  Why mulch?

A:

Mulching protects the exposed soil from rain drops.  Rain drops strike the ground with significant force that will dislodge soil particles, thus starting the erosion process. Properly placed mulch prevents this.

Q: Do silt fences and other barriers completely clean the water?

A:

No.  A majority of the soil particles are removed, but the fine silt will remain in suspension.  Settling basins and sediment traps are designed to slow the storm water flows and allow soil particles to settle.

Q:  When should fertilizer be applied?

A:

Ideally, fertilizer should be applied once the grass has begun to grow.  Fertilizer applied prior to this is subject to being washed away.  This is particularly a problem near bodies of water.
