New Hampshire Shoreland Protection Rules

The N.H. Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act regulates development activities within 250 feet of lakes, ponds, coastal waters and most major rivers. Building of structures must meet the new setback from the public waters. In order to provide a unified approach to the implementation of the act the State of New Hampshire's subdivision and septic system rules have been modified in an attempt to keep regulated projects from being overlooked.

If you are contemplating any activities in a potential shoreland area contact the states DES Shoreland Coordinator at 603-271-3503 to with any questions you might have. Replacement of structures are covered by the rules, check out the rules so you won't be surprised. Local ordinances may also affect development in shoreland areas and the local building officials should be contacted. The fines for improper work can be substantial.
